Graduating Senior Shares Experience Adapting to Nursing School Changes During Pandemic

Will Grayson, who will graduate with his Bachelor of Science in Nursing in May 2021, was in his pediatric rotation at the hospital when his clinical group learned Kent State would transition to remote learning last spring. Grayson said the switch to online courses was not overly stressful as an upperclassmen nursing student since the majority of his lectures were already virtual. Online clinical and fully online simulations, however, required some adjusting. Discover how Grayson has adapted to the continuous changes.

Alumna Uses Social Media Influence to Share COVID Story, Provide Encouragement to Others

Just before the start of the pandemic, alumna Jasmine Jones, BSN ‘17, RN, a med-surg nurse at a large hospital system in the greater Indianapolis area, was not in a good mental place. Pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl, Jones had just learned her daughter would be born with Heterotaxy syndrome, which is characterized as a heart defect, in addition to the possibility she could be born with Down Syndrome, and unable to eat and breathe or possibly be stillborn.

News of the COVID-19 virus was just beginning to make its way onto the evening news.

No Regrets: Would-be Musician Pivots to Nursing

Tyler Hostetler, MSN, AGACNP-BC, Kent State University at Geauga alumnus, discovered an untapped passion while on a practical path. “Kent State wasn’t actually my first undergraduate experience,” Hostetler explains. “After high school, I received an associate degree in recording arts to pursue my passion for music. After graduating, I returned home and reevaluated my career goals, but couldn’t decide what route I wanted to go on, until my brother-in-law mentioned the nursing profession.”

Nursing Faculty Releases New Book

A new book titled “Conceptual Nursing Care Planning” by Kent State University at Tuscarawas professor of nursing technology Dr. Mariann Harding, was released in February 2021 on Amazon.

The book shows how to identify clinical problems, determine expected outcomes, and choose nursing interventions—all grounded in a logical, concept-based framework. It demonstrates how the use of a concept-based approach and standardized clinical problems language makes it easier to plan effective care and to communicate with other members of the interprofessional team.
