Happy Holidays from the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs
As we near the end of 2021, I find myself reflecting on the incredible work of our faculty, student researchers, scholars and all the people who support our new research discoveries. Frequently uncelebrated, our RASP research support staff are second to none in their passion for helping our faculty and students succeed. Furthermore, many of our successes stem both directly and indirectly from the astounding generosity of those who have chosen to support our research and innovation efforts with their philanthropy. With the efforts of so many, we have developed and continue to build a fertile and robust culture of scholarship, exploration and excellence.
To you, our supporters and champions, I want you to know we are grateful for your continued interest in the exceptional work of the Kent State University research community and for your continued commitment to helping us meet and exceed our goals. In this newsletter, we share just a few stories that demonstrate this extraordinary work. The progress we make through scholarship and inquiry fuel my confidence in the future, and I am proud to share these stories with you.
I will leave you with the very best wishes for a bright and promising 2022.
Doug Delahanty, Interim Vice President Division of Research and Sponsored Program
Thank You for Your Support on Giving Tuesday
Thanks to our many generous donors who supported our division funds including the Anti-Racism and Equity Institute, Brain Health Research Institute Undergraduate Fellows Program and the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience during the Giving Tuesday 2021 fundraising campaign. Together, the division raised $40,695 to support students, faculty and staff engaged in research, collaborative work and scholarship support.
We also appreciate the support from generous donors including Dr. Paul DiCorleto, retired vice president, for providing matching gifts for our featured funds.

Research Mentorship Awards Announced
Intentionality to build successful academic mentoring relationships with students is what sets professors apart at Kent State, and each year, two professors at the graduate and undergraduate level receive a student-nominated award for their ability to do so.
These awards recognize those professors excelling in mentoring students to perform research in any field.
This year’s recipients are in the areas of STEM, architecture and environmental science.
AREI - Building on Our History of Activism
The newly created Anti-Racism and Equity Institute (AREI) is an important interdisciplinary hub for faculty, students, staff and community members engaged in race and anti-racism scholarship, activism and education. The Kent State Board of Trustees anticipates that the institute will elevate Kent State to be an exemplar in race scholarship and community engagement.
“Kent State is a university known for its activism,” said Carla Goar, Ph.D., AREI Director. “After the summer of 2020, we asked, ‘What can universities do? What can Kent State do to move anti-racist work forward?’”
