Those of us in the field of nursing have always been on the frontline of health crises as advocates for patient care in healthcare facilities, community health and through research. COVID-19 is another chapter in nurses’ consistent devotion to serving humanity in our collective time of need. Our College of Nursing alumni are rising to this immense challenge right now and inspiring the next generation of nurses. I am grateful for every alumnus, whose professionalism and dedication to practice is impacting innumerable lives. Your practice is essential, and I know that Kent State’s rigorous curriculum prepared you to excel in patient care, education and research.
Three Undergraduate Nursing Students Selected to Present Research on Vaping for Virtual National Conference
Three Kent State College of Nursing students were the only undergraduate students selected to present their research during The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (TAANA) national conference in October.

Kent State College of Nursing to Launch Redesigned Ph.D. in Nursing Program
The College of Nursing will welcome its first nursing cohort into the revised Ph.D. in Nursing program in the fall 2021 semester. The newly developed, state-of-the-science curriculum was thoughtfully constructed to prepare students to address emerging areas of nursing science by gaining essential knowledge in areas such as history and philosophy of nursing, theory, scientific writing, research methods, statistics and quantitative and qualitative research methods and emerging areas of nursing science.
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Certificate Program to be Offered at Kent State College of Nursing
In collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Akron General, the College of Nursing will offer an Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Certificate program beginning fall 2021. Kent State’s SANE certificate program will provide BSN and MSN prepared registered nurses with at least two years’ experience the specialized training necessary to be certified as a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) for adult and adolescent patients. SANEs provide comprehensive care to victims of sexual assault or abuse. In addition, they conduct forensic examinations and may provide expert testimony if a case goes to trial.

Giving Tuesday: Nursing Community Supports Nursing Student Emergency Fund
This year during our Giving Tuesday Campaign from Nov. 9 through Dec. 1, the College of Nursing community rallied together to help raise more than $10,000 in support for the Race into Finals Emergency Fund. This featured Giving Tuesday fund was created several years ago to provide emergency financial support to struggling students in an effort to keep them enrolled.

Doubling Down: DNP and Ph.D. Collaboration at the College of Nursing
Both the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in nursing, established in the 1960s, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), initiated in the early 2000s, provide doctoral degree programs allowing graduates to address the needs of patients and improve the constantly changing healthcare system. However, the divergent focus of the two programs—research methods and knowledge generation (Ph.D.) and evidence-based nursing approaches and application of research (DNP)—often result in doctorally prepared nurses working in silos with limited understanding of the others’ roles and few opportunities for meaningful collaboration.
